About me

Hi! I'm Amy.

I have a strong ear for language and and an eye for detail, which are immensely useful for copyediting and proofreading. I especially love working with fiction and non-fiction writers to develop their manuscripts. You can find out more about all these services on the Editing Services tab.

I'm the submissions editor at Limina journal, an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal of historical and cultural studies at the University of Western Australia. As a journal editor I work with postgraduates and early career researchers to present their research clearly and powerfully, learning about their topic as I go. The same questions apply to all academic writing, whether the topic is art history or political science: Is the argument logical and compelling? Does each paragraph contribute to the argument? Does the structure of the article help us follow the argument? What about style, syntax, spelling, and references?

I'm in the final year of my PhD in Linguistics at the University of Western Australia. My research is about people who are learning endangered Aboriginal Australian languages and how they can pass these languages onto their children.

I have a Masters degree and four years experience working as a Speech Pathologist, specialising in supporting people to communicate through assistive technology.

I also love writing! I'm a huge fan of flash and micro fiction, and of course I do a lot of academic writing as part of my work. You can read some examples below.

Examples of Writing
As the Submissions Editor of Limina journal, I write the introduction for each edition, summarising the broad range of articles and reflecting on the edition as a whole.

  • Limina journal 24.1 Introduction
  • Limina journal 23.2 Introduction

  • A 'tongue in cheek' commentary on a cultural moment:
  • How I, A Millenial, Afforded A Deposit On My Own Home

  • Example of a book review:
  • Stepping Off: Rewilding and Belonging in the South-West'

Writing is an act of courage. Whether you're working on a 100,000 word novel or a job application, what I want most as an editor is to help you feel confident to be creative, finish your project, and publish.

    Manuscript Development/Structural Editing
Manuscript development (also known as structural editing) is the first stage of editing. It means asking questions to develop and clarify the big picture of your work . What are the overall themes that drive the work? Does the structure of the piece support what you want to say? Where are the best places to start and finish a chapter or section to keep the reader hooked? What would happen if we didn't find out the main character had an evil twin brother until chapter 24? What are the characters' true motivations? Does the work suit the audience?

Copyediting involves editing a document for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. It also involves basic fact checking, and ensuring consistency (for example, use of Australian English vs. American English spelling).

Proofreading is the final stage of editing before publication, to make sure every page is formatted correctly, and every 'i' is dotted and 't' is crossed.

    Job applications
I can offer basic services in editing job applications, including writing a great cover letter, formatting a CV/resume, and workshopping selection criteria so that your work experience and skills shine through.

    Basic website design
I created this website using a template from html5up.net. If you want to know more about making your own website, get in contact!

Please contact me to discuss a quote. For documents over 2000 words I prefer to quote by working on the first few pages and then calculating a more accurate estimation of the length of time required. Discounts apply for longer works (more than 3 hours).

    Client Testimonials

    Rachael Keene, author (historical fiction)
I would not hesitate to recommend Amy as an editor. Amy was thorough in her assessment, and identified several issues I had not been aware of, such as plot holes and character inconsistencies. Amy did not approach my assessment in an attempt to rewrite to her own ideas, but almost slipped inside my skin as an author, and sought to provide ideas and suggests that enhanced my own voice and polished my own work.

Her ideas were always constructive and insightful, yet presented in a respectful and sensitive manner, which was much appreciated and led to an easy editor-author relationship. Amy did not hesitate to point out strengths in my writing, as well as areas which needed clarification and more work.

This is the second time I have contracted Amy to perform a structural edit on a large fiction manuscript, and I would not hesitate to seek out her services again. Amy, thank you for a highly skilled and much appreciated edit!

Stella Budrikis, author of Susan (historical non-fiction)
Amy's thoughtful comments have encouraged me (ie given me the courage) to rearrange what I've written, delete interesting but irrelevant paragraphs, ask questions of the source material, and develop the story from "this happened then that happened" to something that draws the reader in. I owe much of the success in having my second book immediately accepted for publication to Amy's editing skills and encouragment.

Send me a message to discuss your project or follow me on facebook to stay in contact. I'd love to hear what you're working on!

Thank you for your email. I will respond to you as soon as possible.
